Illustration Friday: Skyline
My submission for Illustration Friday's "Skyline" is a custom painting that is titled "Seattle Skyline". I did this 2' x 4' dimensional resined painting for Steve and Nancy Ross who live on Bainbridge Island. They came to one of my Seattle shows and commissioned this painting to feature their boat. It is the boat in the center. They asked me to do the view of Seattle from Lake Washington. They also asked if I could construct and add some houseboats including the one that was featured in Sleepless in Seattle (far right). I apologize for this not being closeup so you can see all the amazing details but I sold this long ago, it's on 4"x5" film, my buddy scanned the film and this is what I got. It is not easy to photograph these resined paintings because of all the shine. Most of the skyline buildings and houseboats are individually crafted buildings made from wood and foam and I layered them. All of the sky, water , boats, some background buildings and the Space Needle are painted on masonite and the wood frame. This painting was another highlight in my career as it was large, very detailed and extremely challenging. Please click on image to see a larger view

I have been to Seattle twice only, and loved the city and the islands beyond. How fortunate the Rosses are to live on fabulous Bainbridge Island. Another favorite is Vashon Island. Your painting is glorious! What lucky people they are that actually own the original.

Hey Val, you have the coolest art work. This one is no exception. Your layered pieces are awesome and I know if I saw one in person I would be staring at it for a long time finding the little details.
Will you be doing a calendar for 2007? If so i want one.
awesome, I love the buildings and how the add a persona to the piece!
Hi Val,
Very pretty view on the city !
The buildings dance on the skyline...
It's the festival!
Good night
I am sure they were very pleased with their painting, it is very beautiful, and I am sure it was worth the challenge. You sound like it was a very good experience for you.
What a little jewell! I wish I could hold it and look at it "in the flesh" The colours remind me of Limbourg brothers' Tres Riches Heures
What a spectacular panarama! So lively and amazing!
Absolutely beautiful!!! I'm sure the owners love their painting...I know I love it! The blue is amazing!!...as are the other colors!! Your talents definitely shine through this piece!
Beautiful work, you can feel the delicate atmosphere with those warm lights.
That is super cool! I love those buildings. I'm fond of painting buildings in fun sort of abstract leaning way myself...but those really have some "polish" to them. I think I might have to try this illustration friday thing...looks like fun. I got so caught up in this past weeks inspiremethursday thing I completely forgot about illustration friday! :) There's a lot of these sites, huh? But they let me see all of this great art like yours!
