Illustration Friday: pretend

Let's pretend we are small enough to walk into this box and help ourselves to some chocolate, fun clothes and surf and sun. Wouldn't that be swell? My submission to Illustration Friday's "pretend" theme is a store-shaped candy box for Fred Segal Fun Style. They are located in Santa Monica and specialise in casual beachy fashion and accessories.

Your houses work so nicely for packaging, Valerie. It's a really cute illustration.

I've been playing a little game called "guess Val's IF song" I was wrong again, darn it! I felt for sure it would be Jackson Browne's "The Prentender", the Pretenders was an excellent choice. Fred should be putting saltwater taffy in those boxes, or is that just an east coast thing? Love it, love it.

I want to be enough small for walking around your store!.. =D

Great idea! The illustration worked perfectly! I wish I could buy one of those just for the package!

That would not be difficult to pretend at all. These are lovely creations Val. I like the details in the window. You always manage to put something interesting. I like the torquise bra! I can just imagine you doing this and you have a smile in your face.

I just ADORE your little boxes. Such a fabulous idea, and sooooo much fun. And such a nice quote on the bottom, too. The next time I'm in Santa Monica, I'll have to stop by!

Better yet, maybe I'll head over to Santa Monica and buy up a bunch of those lil houses of yours, set up a little village and then gorge on all the chocolate, heehee. These are just adorable Val!

That better be fantastic chocolate to be worthy of the fabulous packaging!

You need a "Pretend Hotel" for all your friends and admirers to hang out in! I really think you should consider it a priority to construct one for us!:))

i agree with LDahl! gosh, i can also pretend so i can step in any of your work. you\ve done a really great job with this one. i suppose the owner was very happy and craving for more.

I'd buy the box even if someone else had already eaten the candy! You must have had so much fun with this project.

Here is a message sent to all the directors of Red Eyes2.

Dear director,
I am about to link you somehow into the story...nothing negative....this story will continue to unfold as long as you desire:
I think its more proper for you to choose who you would like to be rather than me forcing a label on you and also let me know what your limits are i.e. what you wouldn't like etc
The following characters have been taken:
1. michelle obama's niece
2. Michelle’s personal assistant
3. The psychologist
4. the light
5. the musician
6. the jazz pianist
7. the musician from argentinia
8. the mermaid
9. the jelly fish
10. jumpy the little frog
11. thom of the red rabbits
12. the biochemist
13. girl without shoes
14. the poet
15. former art school girl
16. rebecca the priestess
17. the german actress
18. the safety comissioner
19. the unnamed artist
20. the flying cat
21. barack obama

I need to rename the blogs under the title directors blogs..

Please let me know who you would like to be?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes

I would love to have one as a real playhouse!

I wish I lived in one of your paintings. That would be a cool thing if heaven was getting to live where we wanted, yes?

I used to have a couple of troll dolls when I was about 12. I made them clothes and little rooms out of shoe boxes and bits of stuff I found around and scraps of fabric and notions...I would pretend I lived in there. But they were never as sugary magical as the images I find every week here at your place.
